Will the Real Computer Genius Please Stand Up

By Wouter Olwagen

Remember your first meeting with a "not so friendly" computer device called a mouse or pointing device? Frightening thought and almost cold shivers but maybe more excitement, the mere thought of actually controlling this super genius inhuman, by the flick of a wrist and a click of a button. Back in the old days even before sliced bread, I recall a neighbour inviting us over to view his new toy - that was my first meeting with a personal computer (not so personal my friend thought after a few days - we visited every day for hours).

Needless to say after a month, we were invited or happened to drop by to view the latest addition to this awesome device - a 10 Mega Byte hard disk drive. We were overwhelmed by the thought of storing all our saved games and software on this storage device and still be able to add a year's worth of data without reproducing the dreadful "disk full error". Friend Louis was the coolest kid on the block. We were geniuses, on top of the world, ms-dos experts, untouchable until one day.

We thought we were clever when we figured out how to rename files! We just couldn't get enough of this handy command, then it happened we renamed the actual system files to any name we could think of. Chuffed with our accomplishments we decided to proceed with our journey to take over the world the following day. Shocked was the least to mention the out bursting of emotion, our little super brain was complaining but just wouldn't boot. We eventually confessed to our superiors - (mom and dad) and the true expert were called in the following day to repair the damage. Until today if I rename any file the old memories comes back.

Today I'm glad that I was part of that learning journey. The true expert (our small town local computer technician) impressed me the most although he only reloaded the operating system, he acted and looked like a genius. That day my career took off by helping people becoming computer geniuses or at least in their own environment. I realised that there is always someone with more experience, but we'll catch up. The excitement knowing that today I learned something new, even though I would like to think of myself as technologically advanced, is the true fulfillment.

Becoming a computer genius is possible but remember their will always be someone a step ahead developing another great product or invention and then we start the learning curve all over again. Happy computing and believe in your abilities - you will learn a new cool trick of the trade today and if not read till you do.

Every now and again the need arises to perform some maintenance tasks to ensure the optimal running of your computer. Of course you can use the scheduler to schedule tasks to run when your computer is unattended. The following utilities ensure that your computer stays in top shape.

Defragmentation
Spyware Removal software
Antivirus full scan
Disk Cleanup
Removal of unused software
Clear history of internet pages visited
Full service to be performed by a qualified technician. The major cause of computer or printer failure are dust.
